History and character
Adigeni lies at about 1,240 m on the Akhaltsikhe–Batumi road and became an urban-type settlement in 1961. The town is tiny: the 2014 census counted 783 people, and later estimates range from 899 to 1,015. The municipality (55 villages and the Abastumani resort) had 16,092 residents at the start of 2021.
In the late 16th century the area passed to the Ottoman Empire, and many locals converted to Islam. Before the deportation of November 1944, Meskhetian Turks were about three quarters of the district (32,923 of 41,314 in the 1939 census). Georgians then moved into the houses; the district is now almost entirely Georgian.

The main sights lie around the town, not in it.
- Zarzma Monastery, 8 km west: the present church dates from the early 14th century and was funded by Beka I Jaqeli; a monument of national significance since 2006.
- Abastumani, a climatic resort at 1,340 m: thermal springs of 39–48.5 °C, a 14th-century church of St George and an astrophysical observatory (opened in 1932). Sources put it 16 to 25 km from Adigeni.
- Triala Lakes: three lakes at about 1,600 m, south of the town.
- Okros Tsikhe: a 13th–14th-century fortress near Bolajuri village, held by the Jaqeli family.
Life and economy
Farming dominates: guides mention fruit and potatoes, plus mineral water from the village of Plate. The town has administrative, school and health services but little tourist infrastructure. By car it is about 3 h 45 min to Tbilisi and 32 km to Akhaltsikhe.
