History and character
Chronicles credit King David IV (1089–1125) with founding the town and settling Armenian refugees here. The Goris-Tsikhe fortress was, by one account, in use as early as the 7th century; another dates its first records to the 13th. The town changed hands often (Alans, Persians, Ottomans) and received town status in 1801.
A 1920 earthquake destroyed Gori, and in Soviet times it was rebuilt almost from scratch as an industrial centre. About 69,000 people lived here in 1989 and about 44,500 in 2022 (per Wikipedia). In August 2008 the city was under Russian military control for several days.
