History and character
The name Borjomi is recorded in the 1810s; Russian Wikipedia says soldiers of Tamaz Orbeliani found the springs in 1810. In 1871 Borjomi was granted to Grand Duke Mikhail Nikolayevich, and in the 1890s his son Nikolai built a park and the Likani palace (Leon Benois, 1895–1898). To light it, the empire's first hydroelectric plant was built at Likani in 1898.
The first bottling plant opened in 1890 and the railway arrived in 1894. After 1921 mansions became sanatoria, and a flood in 1968 did serious damage. The resort declined in the 1990s, when refugees occupied some sanatoria.
