History and character
The pass lies on the border of Adjara and Samtskhe-Javakheti, on the Trans-Adjarian route. The resort officially opened in December 2015, according to guides. In December 2017 a new phase was announced: two small lifts and a children's zone were added, and six hotel complexes worth about 80 million GEL were said to be under construction. We did not verify what was built.
Nearby is the Goderdzi Alpine Botanical Garden (1,859-1,960 m, roughly 9.6 ha); per Visit Adjara, work began in 2016.
What to see
Meant to run year-round, the resort is far livelier in winter.
- Three lifts: the Zanka gondola, the Chanchakhi chairlift and a beginner carpet; about 8.4 km of runs in all.
- Freeride, ski touring and cat skiing; there is no avalanche service, so go off-piste only with a guide.
- Green Lake and the plateau around it, for summer hikes.
- Beshumi resort and the fossil forest, per Visit Adjara.
Life and economy
The season runs from late December to the end of March; the opening date is announced in December (9 December 2023, 14-15 December 2024, 28 December 2025). Winter tyres are required and 4x4 is advised. The road via Akhaltsikhe is closed roughly mid-December to late April. Khulo municipality is losing people: 16,342 in 2024 against 23,327 in 2014, down 29.9% (Geostat).
The housing market: what is known and what is not
Near the base station there are hotels, cottages and a hostel, but we found no independent purchase prices. Developers advertise aparthotel units; their figures and yields cannot be checked. - year-round access: snow and road repairs near the pass;
