History and character
The name is linked to the Kobuliani family, which held the land until the 13th century. After 1774 the area fell to the Ottoman Empire and was called Çürüksu; Russia took it in 1878. In the later 19th century Kobuleti became an elite resort. It gained resort status in 1923 and city status in 1944.
Population: 20,637 in 1989, 16,546 in 2014 and 19,356 in the 2024 census (Wikipedia’s early-2024 estimate: about 17,400). In Soviet times the town was a centre of citrus and tea growing.
