History and character
Dusheti is first mentioned in 1215, in an inscription in a Gospel manuscript. In the 17th century the dukes of Aragvi lived here; their quarrels with the kings brought campaigns, and Rostom's 1635 campaign and Giorgi XI's 1688 raid destroyed parts of the town. Georgian Wikipedia says Erekle II granted town status in 1756; English and Russian Wikipedia say Russia did so in 1801. It became a district centre in 1802.
Ilia Chavchavadze served here as a magistrate in 1871, and Pushkin visited in May 1829 (per Russian Wikipedia). In Soviet times there were canning and dairy plants and a carpet workshop; the population rose to 8,483 in 1989 and fell to 6,167 by 2014.
