History and character

Vani stands on the Sulori River, a tributary of the Rioni, about 60 m above sea level. It became a town only in 1981. The population is shrinking: 3,744 at the 2014 census against 4,641 in 2002.

The main story is an ancient city of Colchis whose original name is unknown. According to Wikipedia it was probably a major cult centre in the 8th–7th centuries BC, later a centre with rich burials, and from the 3rd to the mid-1st century BC a temple city with walls, sanctuaries and a bronze foundry. It was destroyed around the mid-1st century BC. Excavations began in 1896; systematic work dates from 1947 or 1966, depending on the source.

What to see

Everything of interest clusters around the archaeological site and nearby villages.

• Vani Archaeological Museum, founded in 1985 and renovated in 2020 with World Bank funding: gold ornaments, bronze and pottery from the 8th–6th centuries BC.
• The site itself, a hill of about 8.5 hectares; the Getty counts 28 burials from roughly 450–250 BC.
• Part of the finds is held at the Simon Janashia Museum in Tbilisi, not in Vani.
• Bzvani Cave, Tabakuro Lake and the Dikhashkho sulphur springs, according to Georgia Travel.

Life and economy

The municipality has about 21,000 residents, roughly four in five of them in villages (2024 census); we found no detailed data on the town's economy. By road it is about 40 minutes to Kutaisi, 2 h 25 min to Batumi and 3 h 30 min to Tbilisi (Georgia Travel).
