History and character
According to Georgian Wikipedia, Tianeti briefly served as the centre of the Principality of Kakheti in the 10th–11th centuries, until King Bagrat IV burned Kvirike III's palace and the centre moved to Telavi.
Under the Russian Empire it was Tionety, centre of a district of the Tiflis Governorate (1874–1930). It became an urban-type settlement on 30 December 1960. The population is shrinking: 4,179 in 1989, 3,598 in 2002 and 2,479 in 2014.
