History and character

Bolnisi Sioni, a three-nave basilica by the town, was built in 478–493 and is regarded as the oldest surviving church in Georgia; its inscriptions, among the oldest dated Georgian writing, mention Bishop David and the Persian kings Peroz and Kavadh.

The town was founded in 1818–1819 by Swabians from Württemberg (95 or 116 families, depending on the source) and named Katharinenfeld after Catherine Pavlovna, sister of Alexander I. It was called Luxemburg from 1921; in the early 1940s the Germans were deported, and the name Bolnisi dates from 1943. Population: 16,300 in 1968, 8,967 in the 2014 census.

• The German quarter — two-storey half-timbered houses on stone foundations, with oak frames and wine cellars; a Lutheran church and cobbled streets survive.
• Bolnisi Museum (2020, architect Gaga Kiknadze) — four halls on Dmanisi finds, the prehistoric Sakdrisi gold mine and the German settlers.
• Tsughrughasheni church (early 13th century) and the Peter and Paul monastery on a hill with a panoramic view.

Life and economy

The economy is mostly agricultural, with wineries and a brewery; a gold mine operates nearby at Kazreti. Bolnisi has PDO wine status, and a 2025 wine map lists 32 wineries. Marneuli is about 40 minutes away and Dmanisi about 30; there is a station on the Marneuli–Kazreti line. I found no festivals in the sources.
