History and character
The name means “queen's spring”; tradition links it to Queen Tamar. Georgia.travel says the name is known from the 12th century, when a military post was set up here. After the region passed to Russia a fort stood here from 1803, and in Soviet times the town was called Tsiteltskaro (“red spring”); the old name returned in 1991. Town status dates from 1963.
