History and character
According to Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani the name means "cell"; from the 17th century it denoted a trading settlement and cathedral on the Tekhuri River. When the Poti–Tbilisi railway began in 1872, the centre moved about 5 km. From 1935 to 1989 the town was called Mikha Tskhakaya, later Tskhakaya.
It had a Soviet airbase from 1945 and today hosts a Georgian army brigade; the NATO-standard base opened on 30 April 2008. Sources give 1921 or 1980 for town rights.

The main attraction lies outside the town.
- Nokalakevi (Archaeopolis, Tsikhegoji) — about 20 ha, with layers from the 8th to 2nd centuries BC and 6th-century walls described by Procopius; excavations since 1973.
- Akaki Khorava Drama Theatre — a neo-baroque building of 1959, a heritage monument.
- Archangel Hill church — 1908, one of few not closed in Soviet times.

Senaki is a station on the Tbilisi–Poti and Tbilisi–Zugdidi lines and a road junction. By car it is about 55 minutes to Kutaisi and 3 h 55 min to Tbilisi. Soviet industry included machine-building, carpet and brick works; today sources mention processing of nuts, laurel, tea, milk and maize. The town is known for red-brick houses. The municipality had 52,112 people in 2002, 39,652 in 2014 and 36,148 in 2024.
