History and character
The town sits in a lowland between the Rioni and Tskhenistskali rivers, about 25 m above sea level and 27 km west of Kutaisi. A village appeared here in the late 18th century amid forest and marsh; when the Tbilisi–Poti railway opened in 1872, settlers arrived and the swamps were drained. Samtredia became a town in 1921.
In Soviet times it had silk-spinning and tea-packing factories, an equipment plant and a woodworking combine; after 1991 many enterprises closed.

The main sights are in the municipality's villages; the town works as a base.
