Tsageri: history, sights and housing

History and character

People have lived here since the Stone Age. The area was a notable metallurgical centre in the Bronze and Early Iron Ages; a bronze hoard from the 10th-9th centuries BC has been found. In the Middle Ages Tsageri was the seat of the Takveri eristavate and a bishopric; later it was the centre of the Lechkhumi uyezd. It became a town in 1968.

The geographer Vakhushti praised the domed cathedral in the early 18th century, but a late 19th-century restoration altered it heavily and the frescoes were lost, including portraits of Queen Tamar and George IV. It is still the seat of the bishop of Tsageri and Lentekhi.

What to see

The best sights lie outside the town, around Lechkhumi.

• History museum — several thousand archaeological items from Lower Svaneti and Lechkhumi.
• The ruins of Muris-Tsikhe fortress and the nearby monastery of St Maximus the Confessor, who may have been exiled and died here.
• Mount Khvamli — caves said to have held the royal treasury; the road is open to vehicles roughly June to mid-October.
• Orbeli (Orbeliani) fortress, visible from the road, and the St George church at Tskheti.
• Lailashi — once the trading centre, with a 19th-century Armenian church, a St George church and a synagogue.

Life and economy

The population is falling fast: Tsageri is among the municipalities with the sharpest decline, minus 18.2% between 2014 and 2024 (Geostat). Reliable sources say little about today's economy; guides mention the spa resorts of Lashichala and Akhalchala and Rioni rafting. Tbilisi is about 318 km away, roughly 5 hours 15 minutes.
