History and character
People have lived here since the Bronze Age. Oni is first mentioned in writing in the 15th century, and legend credits its founding to the Iberian king Pharnajom in the 2nd century BC. It later belonged to the Kingdom of Imereti, passed to Russia in 1810 and from 1846 was the centre of the Racha uyezd.
It was home to Georgia's third-largest Jewish community, after Tbilisi and Kutaisi. According to Wikipedia the synagogue had about 3,150 congregants in 1972 and 16 in 2015; sources differ on the numbers but agree the community has almost vanished. The earthquake of 29 April 1991 (about 7.0), centred on the Oni and Ambrolauri districts, badly damaged the town.
