Baghdati: history, sights and housing

History and character

Baghdati appears in sources from the first half of the 17th century. In 1703 the Ottomans built a fortress here with 100 janissaries; on 2 July 1770 King Solomon I and General Totleben drove them out. In January 1906 the settlement was burned after the 1905 revolution was suppressed (ka.wikipedia).

In 1940 the town was renamed Mayakovsky after the poet born here in 1893; it received town status in 1981 and regained its name in the early 1990s (sources say 1990 or 1991). The name is sometimes traced to Pahlavi roots meaning "god-given"; that is only a theory.

What to see

The main place is the Mayakovsky house museum; the rest is modest.

• Mayakovsky House Museum at 51 Baghdati Street: a wooden house about 170 years old, a museum since 1940 (ru.wikipedia says 1941).
• Exhibits include his crib, wood-carving tools, his mother's embroidery and his father's study, plus local archaeology downstairs.
• The Mayakovsky theatre and the poet's monument.
• Churches of St George and Queen Tamar, and a central park (ka.wikipedia).
• Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park, which per the protected areas agency includes part of Baghdati district.

Life and economy

Soviet-era plants included wine, canning, furniture and poultry; we found no open data on employers today. The municipality had 21,582 residents in 2014, with one town and 25 villages.

The climate is humid subtropical, about 1,500 mm of rain a year (ka.wikipedia). Kutaisi is 25–30 km away and Rioni station about 19 km.

Housing: what is known and what is not

There are no public data on housing prices in Baghdati: we found neither statistics nor reliable reviews. Rely on listings and a local agent. Geostat gives 2,511 residents for 2024 against 3,707 in 2014; the market is very small.
