Sachkhere: history, sights and housing

History and character

Sachkhere appears in sources from the 17th century. From the late 15th century the land around it belonged to the Tsereteli family, whose Modinakhe fortress stands in ruins above the town.

In the 19th century Georgian Jews were a large part of the population: 628 of 1,034 residents in the 1880 count. The railway arrived in 1904 and the settlement became a town in 1964. The poet Akaki Tsereteli, the microbiologist George Eliava and two Olympic weightlifting champions were born here.

What to see

These are small monuments in the town and nearby villages; check opening hours and access locally.

• Modinakhe fortress: built in the 1730s by Papuna Tsereteli; local tradition says the name means "come and see".
• Jurkha Nadiradze Local Museum in Skhvitori: founded in 1978, over 10,500 items, including a stone stele from the 3rd millennium BC; the Akaki Tsereteli house museum is close by.
• Jruchi Monastery near Tskhomareti: it once held the handwritten Jruchi Gospel.
• Churches in Savane (St George, 1046) and Ekhvevi; Ekhvevi is dated to the 10th or 11th century, depending on the source.

Life and economy

The economy rests on farming: English Wikipedia cites about 4,000 small farms in the district. Soviet-era plants included a winery, a cannery and a cotton factory; open sources say little about large employers today.

Rainfall is about 990 mm a year, with an August average high of 30.8 °C (1991–2020 normals, NOAA).
