History and character
In 1983 a fossil rhino tooth turned up in the excavations of the medieval town, in 1984 stone tools, in 1991 the first hominin jaw, and by 2005 five skulls. They date to 1.85–1.77 million years ago; their classification is disputed (often Homo erectus georgicus). Skull 5, described in 2013, had a brain volume of just 546 cm³. Over 10,000 stone tools have been found.
Medieval Dmanisi was a major trading centre: in the 9th century it belonged to the Emirate of Tbilisi, David the Builder retook it in 1123–1125, and after Timur's campaigns (1386–1403) and a sack in 1486 it never recovered. The modern town began as the village of Bashkichet, where Dukhobors were exiled in the 1840s; it became Dmanisi in 1947.
