History and character
Per Wikipedia, Ptolemy mentions the name Teleda in the 2nd century; the city became a political and administrative center in the 8th century and was capital of the Kingdom of Kakheti from the 10th to the 12th. It declined after the united Georgian kingdom broke up in the 15th century and was a capital again in the 17th.
King Erekle II (1744–1798) founded a seminary and a theatre here; by 1762 Telavi was the second capital of Kartli-Kakheti after Tbilisi. It lost that status in 1801, when Russia annexed Georgia. Population: 27,848 in 1989, 20,532 at the 2024 census.
