History and character
Ozurgeti first appears in sources in 1578; in the late Middle Ages it was the residence of the princes of Guria and a trading centre. Town status dates from 1840 or 1846 (sources differ). In November 1905 insurgents took the town and proclaimed a Gurian Republic.
The railway arrived in December 1923. From 1934 to 1989 the town was called Makharadze. Population: 18,705 in 2002, 14,785 in 2014 and 15,647 in the 2024 census.
