Lagodekhi: history, sights and housing

History and character

Wikipedia (the article lacks citations) names the 8th-century Lakuasti fortress and an 11th-century monastery in historic Hereti; in the 1610s Shah Abbas's invasion devastated the place. A military settlement on the Lezgin cordon line was founded in 1830, became civilian in 1857, and the Church of the Protection of the Virgin was built from 1864 to 1897.

The Polish naturalist Ludwik Młokosiewicz urged protection of the area from 1889. In 2003 it was split into a strict reserve and a managed reserve. The town's population fell from 8,968 in 1989 to 5,698 at the 2024 census.

What to see

The main draws are the reserve and the fortresses above town.

• Lagodekhi Protected Areas — 24,451 ha; the managed reserve has five trails, including the Black Rock route to glacial Lake Grdzeli (14 m deep) on the Russian border, and trails to Ninoskhevi Waterfall and Machi castle.
• Fauna: East Caucasian tur, chamois, red deer, lynx, wolf, brown bear and about 150 bird species (Wikipedia).
• Machi castle (11th century) and Kabala fortress; georgia.travel says they endured many battles.
• St. Theodore's church in Leliani (11th–12th century) and the local museum, founded in 1975.

Life and economy

The municipal economy is agricultural: tobacco, grain, essential-oil crops, vines and orchards, with tobacco fermentation, wine, cheese and butter plants (Wikipedia). The Lagodekhi–Zaqatala road with a customs post runs through the municipality. Tourism is an additional income source. Georgia.travel gives about 162 km and 2 h 15 min to Tbilisi.
