History and character
The name dates from the 19th century and means “plain”. By the early 20th century the area was bounded by the Varazis-Khevi stream, the Vere River and mountain slopes; in January 1906 it joined the city. In 1910 only the Nobility Gymnasium stood here; Tbilisi State University (founded 1918) was later housed there.
Intensive building began in the 1920s. The district was linked to Heroes’ Square in 1957, and the Vake–Saburtalo highway (now Tamarashvili Street) followed in 1958. Guides call Vake one of Tbilisi’s most respectable districts.
What to see
The main places lie in the western part.
- Vake Park — opened in 1946 on wasteland, about 200 ha; a fountain cascade and a Glory Memorial with a 28 m Victory statue (1981). Wikipedia says part is closed for restoration.
- Mikheil Meskhi Stadium, 25,000 seats — built in 1956 at the park’s edge.
- Mziuri Park — a children’s park and leisure area, opened in 1982.
- Turtle Lake — on the Mtatsminda ridge slope, 686.7 m above sea level; cable car renewed in 2016, open-air ethnographic museum nearby.
Life, transport and universities
The main artery is Ilia Chavchavadze Avenue; nearby metro stations are Delisi, Vazha-Pshavela and State University. According to Wikivoyage, Vake has two Tbilisi State University buildings and dedicated bike paths. Sources we found do not name the schools.

For comparison, Geostat gives 7,004 GEL (about $2,689) for new builds in Mtatsminda and 4,444 (about $1,706) in Saburtalo: in new builds Mtatsminda is dearer than Vake, while in the secondary market Vake leads per TBC (Mtatsminda $2,171). This site earlier gave ~$3,150 per m² for the resale market; we found no open source for it and removed it. No public rental-yield data found.
